A scenic tour in a floatplane is a great way to appreciate
the vastness of the Moosehead Lake region. There are 15-minute local
tours and other tours ranging up to a 1 hour and 30 minutes over
the mountains, ponds, and vast wilderness surrounding Moosehead
Lake. The popular and traditional fire patrol flights travel a route
near Baxter State Park and beautiful Mount Katahdin---the end of
the Appalachian Trail and the highest peak in Maine. There are moose
watching tours and other wildlife viewing. If hiking or golf is
your passion, have a plane drop you off at Mount Kineo for the day.
If you've dreamed of fishing in a pristine wilderness spot, get
dropped off at Horseshoe Pond. You can even take a canoe along with
you!
Airplanes hold a special place in the history of
the Moosehead Lake region. This history is celebrated each year
at the International Sea Plane Fly-In---always the weekend after
Labor Day. Floatplane competitions, craft fairs, and barbeques make
this a great family spectator event. Land and floatplane pilots
from all over the country and world fly into our waters and airport
to enjoy this tradition. It is by far the most popular annual event
in the county.
Come fly for yourself, and see the area from a different
perspective!
