Camping on Moosehead Lake
Sunset over Moosehead Lake, from a beautiful campsite!

Camping

Camping opportunities are practically limitless in the Moosehead area. If you like to disappear into the woods and not see a single soul for a week---you can do that here. If you have a motorboat or a canoe (or snowshoes in the winter!) and want to seek out a private campsite on an island---you can do that here. If you have an RV and want access to power and showers and a beautiful lake to swim in---you can do that here as well. Moosehead Lake, as well as many surrounding lakes, ponds, and rivers, have designated campsites that are maintained by the State of Maine. Some are accessible by car, while others are more remote and can only be accessed by foot or boat. Picnic tables, campfire rings, and outhouses are generally available and most sites operate on a first come basis. Primitive campsites are also available with landowner permission and open fire permits required. The best way to find these remote sites is in The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, which can be purchased at local stores. The State sites will offer you the ultimate in privacy, scenic beauty, and a true Northwoods experience while you relax by your campfire and listen to the loons.

Lily Bay State Park is a great choice for those who want to drive right to their campsite. The campground has nature trails and about 7 miles of shorefront on Moosehead Lake. There are many waterfront campsites (perfect for kayak access), plus docks, and boat launching areas. A large sandy beach and picnic area is available to all campers.

There are also private campgrounds that cater to tenters or RVers. They offer many services, supplies and the personal touch of their owners.

We appreciate your respecting our motto in the Northwoods: Please take only pictures and leave only footprints.
