Winter's chill provides us with a new landscape during this season. Ice fishing is one of our traditional winter pastimes here in northern Maine, and our frozen waterways create access to new areas and shorelines for fishing and exploring. The frozen waters of the Moosehead Lake Region provide bountiful fishing opportunities for all to enjoy.
From serious individual trophy pursuits to fun filled family outings, the Moosehead Region has it all. Moosehead Lake and its many surrounding lakes and ponds are known for their brook trout, landlocked salmon, and lake trout (togue) fisheries. Several nearby smaller ponds provide exciting action for small mouth bass and white perch.
A traditional "ice shack" or "fish house" provides shelter from the elements, which is certainly appreciated during those arctic like winter days. There are several local retailers ready to equip you with licenses and all of your equipment, bait and tackle needs. Late season fishing can be spectacular, when you can enjoy the bright sun and warmer temperatures.
Ice fishing season runs from January 1 through March 31. The major lakes and ponds that offer ice fishing in the area are Moosehead Lake, Mountain View Pond, Prong Pond, Sawyer Pond, Indian Pond, and Brassua Lake.
